Kinds of questions
Like in other languages, there are questions you can answer with „JA“ or „NEIN“ and others where many answers are possible.
Questions you can answer with „JA“ or „NEIN“ alway start with the verb.
All other questions start with a question word (wo, wann, wie, seit wann, mit wem…) followed by the verb.
Examples:
1. JA/NEIN-Frage – YES/NO-Question (Verb on Position 1)
Hast du Kinder? – Do you have children?
a) JA, ich habe Kinder. – Yes, I have children.
b) NEIN, ich habe keine Kinder. – No I don’t have children.
Bist du verheiratet? – Are you married?
a) JA, ich bin verheiratet. – Yes, I’m married.
b) NEIN, ich bin NICHT verheiratet. – No, I’m not married.
(In the examples above you have only two possibilities „JA“ or „NEIN“)
2. Frage mit vielen möglichen Antworten – QUESTION with MANY possible ANSWERS (Verb follows the question word(s) ).
Wann hast du Geburtstag? – When is your birthday?
Woher kommst do? – Where do you come from?
Wo wohnst du? – Where are you living?
Wie viele Kinder hast du? – How many children do you have?
Ich habe 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 Kinder.
(In all the above examples there are many possible answers, not only two)
Wie alt bist du? – How old are you?
Ich bin 31, 41, 52, 103 Jahre alt.
Seit wann lebst du in Deutschland? – Since when do you live in Germany.
Ich lebe seit zwei Jahren hier. – I live here since two years.
